Abhijit Banerjee receives Nobel Prize 2019 wearing traditional Bengali Bandhgala and Dhoti

Abhijit Banerjee shared the Nobel prize with his wife Esther Duflo and colleague Michael Kremmer, who together worked and experimented the best ways to fight global poverty.

Banerjee and Duflo are professors in the department of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), while Kremer is a professor in the department of economics at Harvard University.

Nobel laureate couple, Banerjee and Duflo, left everyone shocked as they received the Nobel prize in a traditional Bengali attire (a bandhgala jacket and dhoti) and blue sari respectively.

The Nobel prize includes 9 million Swedish Krona (7.45 million Hong Kong Dollars) that will be shared among three winners.

Banerjee born in Mumbai and studied in presidency college became the second Indian after Dr Amartya Sen, who won the Nobel prize in Economics.

Dr Abhijit Banerjee also recommended “Nyay” scheme to Indian National Congress (INC) party during General Election 2019 and he faced severe criticism for that.
